Histoire naturelle, générale et particulière des oiseaux. Tome troisième. [A fine handcoloured copy of this volume from the bird section of Sonnini's Buffon edition, this copy dealing with Falcons and other birds of prey]
- Paris: De l'Imprimerie de F. Dufart, An XI (1803). 397 pp, with 7 fine coloured plates in original colouring. Full leather binding with gilt edges on the boards, gilt illumination on spine and red maroc title labels. Between 1798 and 1804, Sonnini edited a new, revised edition of comte de Buffon's natural history series. He added descriptions of many newly discovered animals. Sonnini himself edited and wrote the birds section. This volume is a rarity because it comes with original colouring. Sonnini had experimented with a small series of coloured volumes, for which he used the then entirely new technique of colour printing. He could only print one colour at a time, so this was very labor extensive and a costly affair. Some of the prints were still finished by hand. This series was therefore an absolute luxury. The colouring on the prints is still very bright and exquisite. Very good copy, binding in near fine shape with only some rubbing of the corners of the boards. Contents with an occasional scattered spot and light uniform age toning, but in all a clean copy. The colouring of the plates is still outstanding. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
