Los Angeles: California Emergency Defense Committee. May 1956 - First edition. Limited edition, signed by Dalton Trumbo. Publisher’s original stapled white card covers, printed in black. A very near fine copy, the binding firm with light toning at the cover extremities. The contents are clean throughout and without previous owner’s inscriptions or stamps. An excellent example. Limited to 750 of which this is number 251 and signed by Dalton Trumbo in red ink to the inside of the upper cover. American screenwriter and novelist Dalton Trumbo was one of the Hollywood Ten, refusing to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1947 during the committee's investigation into Communist influences in the motion picture industry. He went from being one of Hollywood’s highest paid screenwriters to being blacklisted and forced to work clandestinely, producing work under many different pseudonyms. His uncredited work won two Academy Awards for Roman Holiday (1953) and The Brave One (1956). This publication is the author’s analysis of the conviction of the 14 California Smith Act defendants. In November 2015 the Jay Roach directed motion picture "Trumbo" was released with Bryan Cranston in the lead. For his portrayal of Trumbo, Cranston was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor (won by Leonardo DiCaprio for The Revenant).
