The Coming Race
Adam, Stevenson & Co., Toronto 1871 - A mysterious and fascinating science-fiction novel by one of the most profound and intriguing English writers of the nineteenth century. Captivating and thrilling, The Coming Race tells of a superior subterranean race and an energy-form called "Vril", which to some extent has been deemed prophetic by some, most notably Helena Blavatsky and Rudolf Steiner. Written in Bulwer-Lytton's elegant, deeply refined style. Volume shows some pronounced aging on covers from fading and staining. Purple cloth covers feature black line decoration on both boards and title in gilt on front. Boards exhibit some scattered damp/grease stains with mild edge fading and rubbing. Corners are lightly rubbed. Spine has gilt text and blind-tooled gilt decoration, and is strongly sunned and faded with softening at ends. Binding is overall tight with some gaps at gutter between certain pages and some cracking at front hinge. (See photos) Yellow endpapers display pencil notes and are minimally worn. Interior is gently age-toned with some scattered foxing, unevenly pronounced. Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks. Some pages display corner creases and tears along fore edge. (See photos) Text block edges show mild to moderate toning and foxing, with some darkening and dust, and a white stain, along foot. (See photos) Book may exhibit additional minor signs of age or wear. Reprinted from the American edition. One page of publisher ad at end of volume. 207 pages. 5 x 7.25 inches.
