Nicely preserved copy of this elaborate and important early American color plate book, the text foxed as is typical but in an unrestored contemporary binding. REESE (American Color Plate Books) 16; NISSEN 333. MCGRATH, American Colorplate Books, p.54: "Particularly noteworthy for their technique are the 100 very fine hand-colored lithographs, all carefully heightened with varnish, that were published in Joseph Carson's Illustrations of Medical Botany (Phila., 1847).". Two volumes bound in one; folio (34.5cm.); contemporary full sheep, black gilt-lettered spine in six compartments; [2],63,60; 99 (of 100) lithographed hand-colored plates. Boards rather rubbed at extremities with faint signs of soil, unfortunate recent ballpoint pen ownership inscription on front free endpaper, text quite foxed and slightly affecting plates, one plate (no. 94, Veratrum sabadilla) trimmed at bottom edge affecting text. Lacking plate no. 95 (Orchis mascula).
