Very good (lower inner hinge cracked). lxxxiv, 207, [1, ad] pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Presentation Copy. Ebenezer Jones (1820-1860) grew up in straitened circumstances and worked in a London tea warehouse. He published a volume of verse, Studies of Sensation and Event, in 1843. He died in obscurity. "In 1870, however, Dante Gabriel Rossetti wrote a remarkable article in Notes and Queries which proclaimed Jones's 'vivid disorderly power' and prophesied that his reputation would be revived (Rossetti, 154). Rossetti's passionate, adulatory piece, coming at the height of his fame as a Pre-Raphaelite, renewed public interest in Jones" (ODNB). Inscribed on the first blank, "Edmund W. Gosse, Esq., with the editor's compliments, Chelsea June 8th, 1879" With a copy of Shepherd's pamphlet, Forgotten Books Worth Remembering. A Series of Monographs. No. 1.
