The Königsmark Drawings (Superb Copy in Original Glassine and Publishers Box)
Richards Press, London 1952 - Whistler, Rex (Laurence Whistler) (A. E. W. Mason). The Königsmark Drawings. London: Richards Press, 1952. Folio. Illustrated by Rex Whistler with ten full-page plates depicting scenes from A. E. W. Mason's novel "Königsmark" (published in 1938, a very successful royal intrigue novel which went through six printings in less than a year). Mason, best known as the author of the famous Edwardian classic adventure tale "The Four Feathers" hounded Whistler for years to finish these drawings for an illustrated edition (and for which he had paid in advance). Upon finally seeing the illustrations, Mason realized that they were too superb for his book (possibly meaning too expensive) and the illustrated edition never came to be. Eventually the original drawings ended up at the Tate Gallery. This example of this gorgeous publication of reproductions of these ten magnificent drawings, #248 of 1000 copies printed, still retains the ORIGINAL PUBLISHERS GLASSINE DUST JACKET (mostly complete, torn here and there) and is FINE indeed. The Original Publishers Box is worn but complete. The plates and text also remain in superb condition. An important Rex Whistler item containing some of his most ambitious work. This is the best surviving copy that we've encountered, clearly unread by its original owner from whom it was purchased. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
