London: B. T. Batsford Ltd,, 1945.. Octavo. Original orange cloth lettered in yellow, top edge red. With the dust jacket. Colour frontispiece after a painting by the author, 44 black and white photographs on plate paper, 14 illustrations in the text. Very slightly bowed, spine a little faded at foot. A very good copy in the dust jacket, very lightly foxed, spine panel faded, chipped at extremities. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "To Hugh Francis who was so helpful to me in my travels abroad – with all good wishes Cecil Beaton". The recipient, Hugh Francis, has written his ownership signature above. A "Hugh Francis" appeared in the 1971 film Beaton by Bailey, David Bailey's documentary profile of Beaton. Far East is the photographically illustrated travelogue of the author's journey through India and China during the Second World War, on assignment from the Ministry of Information. This venture followed his previous Ministry-approved travels in the Middle East, which were published as Near East in 1943.
