Saginaw MI, 1946. Original handwritten three page letter by Roethke on his mother's printed letterhead. The letter is dated March 23, 1946, and addressed "Dear Hugh" in Roethke's signature green fountain pen ink. The text of the letter is personal and friendly, mentioning Roethke's favorite sport of tennis, "black market" tennis balls, Bennington College, "private questions about what goes on in Old Main, but they will keep . . . " (assuming reference to the Old Main building at Penn State where Roethke taught from 1936-1943). The printed letterhead reads "Mrs. Otto Theodore Roethke / 1805 Gratiot Avenue / Saginaw, Michigan" in black ink. Letters from Roethke are now quite uncommon and scarce in the market. Folded twice for mailing, else fine.
