Carte de visite of Florence Nightingale
[No place: H. Hering, 1858. Near Fine. Albumen photograph. Approximately 2.25" x 3.5" affixed on slightly larger card. Nightingale's name stamped on the verso, with the pencil note "1858." Slight fading, very near fine. Nightingale's experiences as a manager of nurses in the Crimean War, the book was soon to be heavily relied upon in the American Civil War. This image was taken between the two wars and was considered by her family to be the best likeness of her taken during that time. The stamped name on the verso would lead one to believe this was a commercial publication, likely sold for souvenir albums. Nevertheless it is less common than several other images of her, and especially so in nice condition.
