Gordon Ray [THE ILLUSTRATOR AND THE BOOK IN ENGLAND FROM 1790 TO 1914] calls this "Doyle's most personal book with respect to life in the world.....The artist Brown, in whom there is a good deal of Doyle himself, records in scores of little scenes the vicissitudes and humors encountered by his companions and himself during a summer's excursion to Germany and northern Italy."
