Original and Rare Special Issue of the London Gazette, Being a Primary Source Admiralty Dispatch, to Announce the Successful and Sudden Battle of San Domingo.
Bristol, 23 March 1806: Rudhall & Gutch, 1806. Original and rare special issue of the London Gazette, printed and published by Rudhall & Gutch at 15 Small-Street in Bristol for Felix Farley's Journal Office, being an important dispatch from the Admiralty to announce the successful and sudden Battle of San Domingo which had erupted on 6 February, initiated by a British fleet and resulting in a notable assault and the capture of a notable French warship and her crew. 8vo. Single leaf, printed recto only, measuring approximately 20 x 31,5 cm. Some creasing, otherwise in very good condition. News of utmost significance and worthy of immediate release to the public - this gazette was printed the very same day that Commander Cochrane landed in England with the official despatches in hand! A "Gazette Extraordinary" is a special edition deemed to require additional gravitas to reflect the importance of the event, such as a declaration of war, a conclusive battle such as the one described in the present issue, the accession of a monarch to the throne, or the like. Led by British Vice-Admiral Duckworth, the decisive single day battle, brisk and expeditious, was for the British Empire a victorious engagement. The victory was celebrated in Britain and across the Empire, particularly in the Caribbean where rumours of Leiss├Ęgues' presence had stifled trade and caused panic among the merchant houses of the West Indies. .
