David
Sherman Oaks California : Joe D'Ambrosio, 1993. Limited Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. As New/Slip Case . 10x13. Joe D'Ambrosio. One of 25 Copies (#1). In a binding of cast paper and white Masonic Sheepskin in a specially fitted side-hinged box of black cloth over archival boards. Hand printed on a Vandercook #4 letterpress. Opening leaves with striking dovetailed bas-reliefs of Michelangelo's sculpture of David, text with a variety of decorations and illustrations. This is the latest as well as the most delightful of D' Ambrosio's (1934 -2009) inimitable bibliophilic masterworks. Produced and partly written by D. Ambrosio, the book is done on handmade paper by Madeleine Pestiaux and contains photographs by Wallace Rhodes. The cast paper cover represents the marble slab out of which Michelangelo's David will emerge, and with each succeeding turned leaf at the beginning of the book, the reader sees the rock transformed, from a roughly hewn image at first and finally into the finished statue. The way in which these opening leaves demonstrate Michelangelo's notion that a sculptor discovers or reveals or brings out a statue from its confinement within a slab is absolutely delightful. Like D'Ambrosio"s other works, this oblong folio is cleverly designed and reflects a great deal of work and imagination. The typographic display of the various texts is expressive in itself as well as quite pleasing, and there is a good deal of decoration ( embossing, serigraphs, paste ons) within the text. The book is of obvious interest for its innovative design and charm, but the text, which occupies almost 70 pages, is substantial as well. It is a pastiche that consists of a kind of modern love story which finds resonance in poetry, mostly by Michelangelo, but also by S' Ambrosio and David Michael Soloman. The story and poems are displayed on the page in such a way as to indicate their interconnection. The whole package deals with the profoundly important variates of life: love of various kinds, sexuality, the pressure of societal values, freedom, and death. A magnificent tour-de-force by one of the great book artists. Also enclosed is an ALS by Joe asking two of his most fervent supporters ( my mother and father) what they thought about various aspects of the book, pricing, displaying etc. Signed by illustrator.
