SEVEN GOTHIC TALES. With An Introduction By Dorothy Canfield
New York: Harrison Smith & Robert Haas, 1934. First American Edition. Hardcover. A near fine copy in a very good plus jacket with a few tiny nicks to extremities. The author's real name is the Danish Baroness Karen Blixen. A collection of stories set mostly in the nineteenth century, contains her tales "The Deluge at Norderney" and "The Supper at Elsinore". Author's first book published three years before her memoir 'Out of Africa." Half cream colored boards and red cloth spine and tips. Bold gilt lettering to spine, front cover illustration also bold. Top stain dark red. $2.50 flap price. After this book was rejected many times a small publisher took a chance, but there were conditions: the well-known novelist Dorothy Canfield Fisher must write an introduction, and the author was to receive no advance. Blixen gambled and took the offer. Then she won - for, much to the surprise of all, Seven Gothic Tales was chosen by the Book-of-the-Month Club, which was a guarantee of wide publicity and large sales.
