Riga, "undzer Zukunft"(1929). 1st Yiddish Edition. 8vo, Later cloth with Original modernist color wrappers bound in, 159 pages. Includes illustrations of the human reproductive organs, labeled in Yiddish. In addition to the important content, the design of the cover is classic late 1920s modernist Yiddish book design, with the use of black and red lines and circles amongst the Yiddish lettering. Originally published in German as "Bub und Ma del; Gespra che unter Kameraden u ber die Geschlechterfrage, " the title translates as, "Guy and Gal: A Comradely Discussion about the Question of Morals. " 1st Yiddish translation, from Riga, of Max Hoddans progressive pro-sex discussion of changing sexual morals, advocating for a more open and liberal view of sexuality. Hodan who was Jewish, was Berlin's chief medical officer (surgeon-general) , and published the "Worker's Sexual Magazine, " perhaps not a surprise as "Hodan had been involved in the sex reform movement in Germany. His book gives us a good example of the price which the sex reformers took in what they saw as the dangerous struggle with puritanical ideas. Hodan wrote that the history of sexology was a 'record of the resistance of the champions of obsolete ideas and customs, threatened in their security and supremacy bu the pioneers of constructive progress'" (Jeffreys, The Spinster and Her Enemies: Feminism and Sexuality, 1880-1930. P. 186) . SUBJECT(S) : Sex. Sexual ethics. Sex instructions. OCLC lists 5 copies worldwide (Royal Danish Lib, Cleveland Pub Lib, YIVO, HUC, Oxford) . Paper toning as expected, but not fragile. A very solid attractive copy (YID-26-14)
