Early 20th Century - DescriptionA skilful portrait which beautifully captures the seemingly thoughtful personality of the sitter. This is a fine example of Douglas's ability to create an almost photographic realism. Inscription verso details the identity of the sitter and documents his position in the 1st Royal Fusiliers during WW1. Well presented in a gilt frame and gilt slip. Signed. On board. ConditionInspection under UV light reveals areas of restoration to the background and the gentleman's hair. With some craquelure and small losses to the edges of the board, as shown in photos.BiographyHarry Douglas (1862-1934) was a portrait painter born in Edinburgh. In 1901, having studied under Sir Noel Paton, Harry moved to Belfast to earn a living as a professional portrait painter. It was here that he became the honorary secretary of the Belfast Art Society. Douglas exhibited work at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and several of his portraits are owned by Ulster Museum.
