A Practical New Grammar, with Exercises of Bad English: or, An Easy Guide to Speaking and Writing the English Language Properly and Correctly
Thomas Slack, Newcastle 1768 - Newcastle, printed for Thomas Slack, 1768. 11th edition. 12mo. (xii), 179pp, [1]. A relatively early edition of grammarian Anne Fisher's handbook on English grammar and syntax first published as 'A New Grammar' in 1745. With sections on spelling, pronunciation, kinds of words, syntax etc. and an appendix that includes a table of similar-sounding words that illustrates their differing spellings and meanings. Bound in contemporary full sheepskin with an un-lettered spine. Ink doodles and early ownership inscription of George Forster of Riddings (Derbyshire) on the front endpapers, with a list of 11 names with birth dates on the rear endpaper. Presumably, Forster's children. A small worm-hole to the rear hinge. Title page and first leaf dust-soiled and finger-marked. Occasional light finger-marking. The tips of the upper and lower corners of the whole text block have been neatly cut obliquely to the edges of the pages, though with no loss the text. This may well have been done by the bookbinder, possibly to aid page-turning. Otherwise, a clean copy of a scarce work with the text block sound and the binding in remarkably good condition.
