Ne?ný barbá? - Pedagogické texty [The Tender Barbarian. Pedagogical Texts].; Edice Petlice, volume 18
Prague: [Edice Petlice], 1974. Octavo (21 × 15 cm). Decorative slipcase; original linen over boards; title printed to spine; typescript carbon copies to recto only, on thin rice paper; 243, [1] leaves. Signed by the author on the title page verso. Fine. First edition, in samizdat, of these lectures and lyrical essays by Bohumil Hrabal, perhaps the most significant Czech author of the twentieth century. Before authoring a self-critical essay in the journal Tvorba in 1975, Hrabal was unable to publish his work officially and many titles appeared in samizdat. The title page reads 1974 B, possibly referring to a variant copy or "second state"? The colophon, however, bears the typical manuscript clause of Edice Petlice, the initial letters of which spell the word "vzdor" (meaning "defiance"): "Výslovný zákaz dal?ího opisování rukopisu." KVK, OCLC show a single copy at the British Library, though it is catalogued as "Portfolio (95 leaves)" and thus presumably one of the "pre-edition" copies circulated before Edice Petlice was founded.
