The Life of Sir Isaac Newton.
John Murray. 1831. 12mo. Sometime rebound in half red morocco for Sotheran, spine with gilt raised bands, centre tools and lettering, marbled endpapers; pp. xvi +366, frontispiece portrait of Newton, 1 plate of Descartes, numerous text illustrations; a little sunnign to spine, otherwise very good. First edition. This is the first authoritative biography of Newton, written by an author who was himself a notable scientist. It was written primarily to scotch theories put about by Biot that Newton had gone mad in 1692 and had given up his scientific work. It includes much material for the first time, such as the letter between Halley and Newton on the publication of the Principia.
