Plates Illustrative of Ferguson's Lectures
Edinburgh - Bell and Bradfute 1806 - A very scarce, early Nineteenth Centurycollection of plates illustrating the lectures of eminent Eighteenth CenturyScottish scientist James Ferguson, known outside his immediate field for his renowned globe-making. Focussing on mechanics, hydrostatics, hydraulics, pneumatics, optics, geography, astronomy and dialing, the volume contains plates throughout, illustrating and completing a two volume set, the first of which is absent here. A interesting insight into Eighteenth Century scientific education. Condition: In cloth binding with gilt detailing. Externally, there is sunning to front board and backstrip, as well as marking and wear to extremities, joints, boards and backstrip. The backstrip is starting and the hinges are tender. Internally, the pages are firmly bound but are age toned, spotted and foxed throughout. There is an inkstamp to the rear pastedown. Overall: GOOD [Attributes: Hard Cover]
