London: Oxford University Press,, 1916. Translated by Henry Francis Cary. With 109 Illustrations by John Flaxman. Octavo (180 x 126 mm). Contemporary tree calf, raised bands to spine ruled and richly decorated in gilt, morocco label, covers bordered in gilt floral roll, turn-ins gilt, board edges gilt, marbled endpapers, edges gilt. Frontispiece with tissue guard, illustrations to text, all by Flaxman. Bookplate to verso of front free endpaper. Spine and head of covers lightly faded. Otherwise a fine copy. A handsomely bound copy of Cary's translation of Dante's classic work, first published in 1814 and considered to be the best of the Romantic era.
