(Photo album): Extensive Family Photo Album of Travel, Fashion, and Nature in the 1920s-1930s
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania / New York / Ohio, 1930. Near Fine. Oblong quarto measuring 10" x 7". String tied, black leather over stiff paper boards. Contains 1,020 black and white gelatin silver or sepia toned photographs measuring between 0.5" x 0.5" and 5" x 4" with some captions. Some edgewear else near fine album with fine photographs.An abundant collection of family photographs from 1918 through to 1930 collected by Rachel Elyada Wayne. The photographs are well composed even including some photographs with intentional double exposures and diamond cut outs. Wayne's family lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania occasionally traveling together on family vacations or adventuring with friends. The family often travels to various places in New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio, with captions such as, "Taken at Columbus, Ohio after eating our lunch, when a flat tire was being fixed and just before committing on our way to Cincinnati and Newport, NY July 1928". There are several pictures of Wayne and her family visiting the state capital in New York and on Coney Island, camping trips in Vandergrift, Pennsylvania, and family reunions in Youngstown, Ohio. The traveling photos usually show the family's automobiles from the 1920s and pictures of their camping groups, Apollo Camp and Luchlurg Camp. They also visited different caves including Mammoth and Sand Cave in Kentucky. One family trip also shows a small plane crashed into the ground, smoke and flames caught by the camera. The photographs cover a wide span of the different family member's lives. There are pictures of babies and young children that later are shown as teenagers making funny faces, posing, or in one photo eating Cracker Jacks. There are a couple wedding photographs, pictures of family gatherings, posed outfit pictures, photos of people dancing, and one with an elderly couple pretending to battle with brooms. Small captions are written on photographs with the names of the children, "Che Che's Happy-go-lucky!" The album also mentions where some of the family members worked. A large group photo with Rachel Elyada Wayne and some of her family members is pictured with the caption "Pittsburgh Trust Co." as Rachel was a stenographer for the bank. There are also a couple photos of some of the young women in the Rickety Rackety Serenaders, a women's singing group and instrumental band. Included are several photographs of some of the young men in their military uniforms dated 1929.Some of the photographs are of animals and nature. A few of the photographs are of deer in the snow, the camping sites, and some of the boats in the rivers. There are also a couple pictures of a lightning storm, where the bolts of lightning can be seen in the photographs. An extensive collection of particularly aesthetically pleasing family photographs featuring nature, fashion, and travel during the 1920s through to the 1930s.
