The Kitchen Directory and American Housewife : containing the most valuable and original receipts, in all the various branches of cookery : together with a collection of miscellaneous receipts and directions relative to housewifery : also the whole art of carving, illustrated by sixteen engravings
New York: Published by Mark H. Newman & Co., No. 199 Broadway; J.D. Bedford Print, 138 Fulton St, 1841. Octavo (19 x 12 cm.), [4], [1-4], 5-144 pages. Illustrated with a two-page plate of market cuts of beef, venison, mutton, veal, and pork, and with sixteen additional illustrations in the text, in the final section, "The Art of Carving". Published also under the titles: The American Housewife; and The American Housewife and Kitchen Directory. "Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1841 by Dayton & Saxton in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the United States for the Southern District of New-York" - title page verso. ~ An unspecified early printing of the first edition. The text was substantially published earlier, in 1839, under the title The American Housewife... and numerous printings were issued - at least six in 1841 alone - until the book was published in an extensively revised and enlarged edition in New York 1855 (see Cagle 30 for more information on the printings). Internally foxed, spotted and stained throughout; still legible and with a sound textblock. In original publisher's brown cloth, blind stamped and gilt-titled worn at corners and chipped at head and foot of spine. Good only. Previous owner's pencil inscription to free front endpaper: "Mrs. E. Sherman, 1879", and again to the rear paste-down, with a location, "Sherman, Tecumseh, Michigan, Aug. 20, 1878". Final few pages contain a series of handwritten recipes, in a neater hand than that of Mrs. Sherman. [OCLC locates numerous copies of the various 1841 printings; Bitting page 516; not in Cagle; Lowenstein 271; Checklist American Imprints 41-2938].
