London: Printed for J. Payne and J. Bouquet, 1750-1751. FIRST EDITION. Folio (31 x 21cm), 2 volumes, pp.[2]; 532; [2]; pp.533-1096. With the very rare First Issue of the Title-Page. A fine tall set with full margins containing 183 original bi-weekly sheets, from March 20, 1750 to December 17, 1751. Recently bound in period style mottled calf with raised bands, red and black title labels and extra gilt to spines. With the Norbury Booths Hall bookplate, dated 1826. Volume.I, Number 1 is a first printing, volume.II, Number 109 is a perfect copy, i.e. not a "vitious" copy.Inner margin to rare title page restored; one page of text repaired; neat old inscription to first blank. A superb set of this rare work, generally considered Dr. Johnson's greatest work and formed the basis of his high reputation which increased till the end of his days. It went on to No 208, until March 1752. Fleeman 50.3R/1a.
