HOUSE AND HOME PAPERS By Christopher Crowfield
Boston Ticknor and Fields 1865 - First Edition, binding A (no sequence determined). 8vo, publisher’s original plum cloth decorated in blind on both covers, the spine lettered in gilt and with gilt Ticknor emblem, binding A with the flower corner-pieces in double-ruled panels. 333 pp. A very handsome and well preserved copy, the text with only meager mellowing and that mostly at the prelims, the cloth bright, even at the spine panel, unusually clean and pleasing. Scarce in this condition. FIRST EDITION. UNCOMMON IN SUCH NICE CONDITION. This volume of essays and short stories by Harriet Beecher Stowe was written under the pseudonym Christopher Crowfield. It is likely that Stowe took on a male pseudonym to be more acceptable to the male dominated literary outlet Atlantic Monthly, where some of these pieces were first published. It is also possible that she was trying to prevent the work from being overshadowed by her vastly popular and famous bestseller UNCLE TOM'S CABIN. In these short pieces Stowe focuses on the American household of the 1860s, and many of the stories offer important comment on changes wrought by the Civil War. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
