Antique Print-LADY-PROVOCATIVE DRESS-FAN-DOG-William Ward-Ramberg-1790
- Original stipple engraving titled: 'Public Amusement.' This original print shows: a lady in provocative dress, smiling demurely behind a fan. A small dog beside her. Stipple engraving coloured on the plate (a-la-Pouppee) on a verge type paper. Description: Separately published master print. Our definition of master print is a seperately published print or series of prints, not being an illustrative print to a text. These can both be prints made by old masters (artists) or prints made by others (artists, engravers, etchers) after old masters. Originally published in c. 1790. This is probably a later 19th. c. ed.Artists and Engravers: Engraved by W. Ward after H. Ramberg. William Ward (1762-1826) was an English engraver and the elder brother of James Ward. William would engrave many of his brother's works, who was seen as one of the outstanding artists of his time. Johann Heinrich Ramberg (Hanover 1763-1840) was a German painter and printmaker. He was initially employed by George III, and made humorous sketches and caricatures for him. He subsequently moved to London where he met Reynolds and Bartolozzi. In London he studied under Benjamin West and began exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1784. He traveled through Europe before returning to Hanover in 1792, to be appointed electoral court painter. Condition: Very good given age. Top and bottom margins cropped. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
