New York: Random House, 1971. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/near fine. Octavo size, 59 pp., inscribed by author. The second book, and first of her poetry, published by this award-winning author, who received a Pulitzer Prize nomination for this book. Many of the poems in "Diiie" were originally song lyrics, written during her career as a night club performer, and recorded on two albums before the publication of Angelou's first autobiography "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" (N.B., from Wiki). An extremely gifted woman, Maya Angelou (1928-2014) served as a spokesperson for the African-American community throughout her life, both in her works and by public appearances, to both popular and critical acclaim. ***DESCRIPTION: Orange paper over boards with a red cloth shelfback, the title blind-embossed on the front, silver gilt lettering on the spine, tan endpapers, inscribed by Ms. Angelou on the front free endpaper with the single word "Joy!" with her signature beneath (undated); octavo size (8.5" by 5.5"), pagination: [i-x], (1-2), 3-48, (49 - author bio). The dust jacket shows the original price of $4.95 on the front flap, code of "9/71" on the bottom of the back flap, illustration on the front in purple, red, orange and yellow on a black background with white lettering, spine with red, white and purple lettering, photograph of author on the back panel, the front flap has a review blurb by James Baldwin, a short summary of the book, and a publisher's ad for "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings", back flap has the author's bio. ***CONDITION: Volume is almost fine, with the binding clean and without wear, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and free of prior owner markings; some foxing to the top edge of the text block, else fine.
