Tamarix Passerinoides 15. Hesperis Pygmaea'. Stipple engraving on a verge type handlaid paper. Description: This original antique print originates from the second edition of the Histoire Naturelle volume (vol. 2) of 'Description de l'Egypte ou recueil des observations et des recherches qui ont ete faites en Egypte pendant l'expedition de l'armee Francaise' by J.-Ces. Savigny. Published: Paris, C.L.F. Panckoucke, 1826. It was a series of publications, appearing first in 1809 and continuing until the final volume appeared in 1829, which offered a comprehensive scientific description of ancient and modern Egypt as well as its natural history. It is the collaborative work of about 160 civilian scholars and scientists, known popularly as the savants, who accompanied Napoleon's expedition to Egypt in 1798 to 1801 as part of the French Revolutionary Wars, as well as about 2000 artists and technicians, including 400 engravers, who would later compile it into a full work.Artists and Engravers: Engraver: Coupe & Lepissier. A large vertical crease over the middle of the image and one in the lower left corner. Dampstain in the bottom left corner. Sheet edges quite browned. Irregular uncut paper edges with small tears and nicks, not affecting image. General age-related toning and/or occasional light stains from handling. The image is merged from multiple scans. As a result, slight variations in colour may occur and the image may have slight inconsistencies. Please contact us with any questions.
