Late 19th Century - Robert Burrows (1810-1883) - A Fine Original Late 19th Century Oil. A fine painting of a couple resting by a river, with a moored rowing boat and cattle beyond. Signed to the lower centre with a Rowney & Co., London canvas stamp on the reverse. Signed. On canvas on stretchers. Condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. Small areas of paint loss and abrasions to the edges of canvas , but these would be covered once frames. A small dent to the canvas at the lower right corner with associated paint loss, measuring approx 0.75 cm long. Surface dirt present but paint layer is sounds and secure.Born at Ipswich in 1810, Robert Burrows was the eldest son of Robert Burrows (1782-1863), silversmith in the Old Cattle Market, Ipswich, and his wife Elizabeth, daughter of James Cordy of London. His younger brother was Sir John Cordy Burrows (1813-1876), the eminent surgeon and local politician. A member of the newly formed Ipswich Society of Professional & Amateur Artists in 1832, along with Samuel Read, Robert Burcham Clamp and Jabez Hare, jun. who were probably instructed by Henry Davy. He exhibited at the Suffolk Fine Arts Association exhibition at the New Lecture Hall at the Mechanics' Institute, Ipswich in August 1850 and at the Royal Academy and at the British Institution between 1851 and 1855. Between 1865 and 1868, he was an artist and agent for London Fire Assurance Co. in Ipswich. Burrows enjoyed friendships with other Ipswich artists including Edward Robert Smythe. He also had an interest in photography and a volume of his photographs are in the Suffolk Record Office, Ipswich. By 1869 he seems to have taken up painting as his full time occupation. A regular exhibitor at the Ipswich Art Club from 1879, Robert died at his home in Ipswich on 10 November 1883.
