TABART'S COLLECTION OF POPULAR STORIES FOR THE NURSERY: Newly translated and revised, from the French, Italian, and old English writers. Adorned with numerous plates. VOL. III.
London, printed (by B. McMillan) for Tabart & Co., 1809.. VOLUME III ONLY OF 4, these were sold as a set or individually (as stated at foot of title page). SECOND EDITION 1809, 12mo, 140 x 90 mm, 5½ x 3½ inches, original red roan backed plain grey boards, gilt rules and 3 tiny gilt ornaments to spine, gilt title, pages: (4), 188, (2), engraved hand coloured frontispiece plate from Jack the Giant Killer dated 1804, depicting the giant holding 2 small children, plus 6 engraved plates with neat amateur hand colouring, some also dated 1804. The fairy stories: Jack the Giant Killer; Tom Thumb, Goody Two-Shoes; Tommy Two-Shoes; The Seven Champions of Christendom, with a plate showing St George attacking an enormous dragon; Valentine and Orson. In this second edition two brief tales are added: Prince Fatal and Prince Fortune, and The Three Wishes. Binding worn, head and tail of spine slightly chipped, tiny crack in spine, hinges starting to crack at top and bottom, boards rubbed, corners slightly worn, child's pencil doodle on front pastedown (not erasable), some pencil writing on rear pastedown, front free endpaper missing, neat old paper repair to top margin of title page, old inscription at top of Contents page, pale brown offsetting onto text opposite some plates, occasional very small light stain, 2 tiny holes to 1 inner margin, 1 plate slightly foxed in the margin and with small light brown stain to lower margin corner, another plate with the same stain, another browned in the margins. A good copy of an uncommon early children's book, complete with all plates. Moon describes the plates in the first edition of 1804 as "hand coloured or plain" but does not mention hand colouring in the second edition.
