Mural-Scrolls [Mural Scrolls]
New York: Katzenbach and Warren, Inc. 1949. RARE PORTFOLIO WITH ORIGINAL SILKSCREENS by Matisse, Calder, Miro, and Matta. A rare complete sample book created by Katzenbach and Warren, Inc. in 1949 to promote an intended limited series of large scrolls by the artists. The series of large scrolls never materialized although a handful were completed, generally for people associated with the project.

Although relatively large, (12 x 18 inches including the burlap mount), the silkscreens in this collection are reduced versions of the intended larger scrolls (six to ten feet in length and four to six feet wide).

Printed on canvas and mounted on burlap, the four silkscreens show exquisite depth of color and rich texture. Includes: "A Piece of My Workshop" by Calder; "Arbre en Fleur" by Matisse, "Sun-Dice" by Matta, and "El Sol" by Miro. The Matisse and Miro prints have a small stamp "MS" (for "Mural-Scrolls", as issued). With introduction by James Thrall Soby and statements by each of the artists. New York: Katzenbach and Warren, Inc., 1949. Folio, original spiral-bound color boards; housed in an exquisite box by noted book designer Sjoerd Hofstra. Rear board neatly detached (but holding securely under the added mylar jacket); a few abrasions to boards. Tape residue to both inside covers (as in all copies we've seen), offsetting to last page of text (as always). A little paste action and burlap impression to Matisse. A stunning set, with the silkscreen colors remarkably bright. RARE.
