The Fate of the Evangeline. [In] The Boy's Own Paper.
London: R. K. Burt and Co., 1885. [English literature]. FIRST APPEARANCE of a rare uncollected short story. A4 magazine (30 x 22cm), pp.[4] 64 [10]. With numerous in-text wood engravings by various artists. Stapled in original paper covers with coloured illustrations.Light browning to covers, with some rubbing to edges, especially the spine. Losses to head and tail. Some tears to advertising fly-leaf around rusting staples. A rare survival - good overall. Originally submitted to Blackwood's Magazine the previous December, Doyle finally had his short Christmas mystery story published in this Boy's illustrated magazine. It tells the strange tale of the disappearance of a young woman stranded alone aboard a yacht accidentally cast adrift from its mooring off an island in the Outer Hebrides in 1873. Green and Gibson, 'A Bibliography of A. Conan Doyle', D.1.
