[7], 4-12, 131-134, 13-126, [7], 138-150 p. + plates (pp. 131-134 misbound). 18 cm. 21 colour plates at rear in red, green and black. One b&w woodcut diagram of chess pieces. Full leather with gold impressing. Chipped spine ends and worn corners. Bookplate and clipping on front pastedown. Ink notations on bottom of front pastedown, rear of front free endpaper, and top of half title. Foxing. Tear in p. 143. Philidor (1726 – 1795) was a French composer who was also regarded as the best chess player of his age. He once played three blindfold games simultaneously in a chess club in London. A well-known chess opening and a checkmate method are both named after him. Eventually, as the clipping on the inside cover notes, he was forced to flee the French Revolution and settle permanently in England. First published in 1749, this book was a standard chess manual for at least a century. It was the first that gave detailed annotations on how to play the middle part of the game, that presented chess strategy as a whole, and that presented the concepts of the blockade, prophylaxis, positional sacrifice, and mobility of the pawn formation. A scarce edition, produced in the U.S. in French. Note the bookplate for Rev. F. X. Burque, apparently a well-known 19th-century chess player from St. Hyacinthe, Quebec.
