The Kafirs of Natal and Zulu Country.
London: E. Stanford,, 1857. Octavo (212 x 132 mm). Later 19th-century red calf, spine gilt in compartments, black morocco label, double gilt fillets to sides enclosing dotted blind roll, marbled edges and endpapers, turn-ins hatched in blind. Tinted lithographic frontispiece, 3 similar plates, wood-engravings to the text, hand-coloured sketch map. Bound with the half-title. A few small markings to sides, light rubbing to spine-ends and corners, mild toning, a little spotting to endpapers, lithographic plates foxed and offset, a couple with small tide-marks in margins. A very good copy. First edition of "one of the best works on the native races of Natal and Zululand published up to the middle of the 19th century" (Mendelssohn). The author spent four years as a missionary in Albert, Natal, and provides a detailed account of Zulu and Xhosa customs and beliefs, and a history of Shaka Zulu and his successors. His own findings are supplemented by reference to the accounts of Döhne, Isaacs, and the early English settler Henry Francis Fynn.
