A good copy. First edition. Baines (1820-1875) was one of the pioneers of European exploration in the lands forming modern Zimbabwe, where he led an expedition in the 1860s to secure concessions for a gold-mining company from King Lobengula. Although the company in question failed to take advantage of the terms Baines extracted, this posthumously-edited account (Baines died at Durban in 1875) is considered a "most important work … [which] contains full information of every description upon the subject of the gold discoveries in Matabeleland and Mashonaland, with much curious knowledge of Africa … The author gives details of no less [sic] than nineteen routes from various places in South Africa to the newly discovered goldfields in the Transvaal and Lobengula's country, and there is a large map" (Mendelssohn). There is also big-game interest, with accounts of brushes with elephant, buffalo, rhinoceros, zebra, and lion.
