With a Foreword by Marshal of the Royal Air Force Sir John M. Salmond. Octavo. Original green cloth, red lettering to spine, top edge green. With the pictorial dust jacket.` With portrait frontispiece and six black and white illustrations by Leonard Bridgman. Bookplate of recipient to front pastedown. Slight foxing to edges. A very good copy in the dust jacket, which is slightly soiled to spine panel, price-clipped, reinforced at the inner spine panel and has short tears to the top corners. First Aviation Book Club edition. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the title page "To Captain D. Mason with great sympathy Willy Coppens de Houthulst May 1971". Loosely inserted is a slip of paper on which is typed "Sorry to say that John Hamilton Ltd, the English Publisher, cheated in publishing DAYS ON THE WING for "Aviation Book Club" forgetting to pay any copyright to the author!" Underneath is written "See page xi" in the author's hand. On page xi, the author has written "I had still all my illusions when I wrote this! W.C.H." Willy Coppens was perhaps the greatest Belgian fighter pilot of the First World War, and was decorated by Belgium, France, Britain, Portugal, Italy, Poland, and Serbia for his achievements. Derek Mason, the recipient of the book, was a flight lieutenant in the RAF during the Second World War before serving as a commercial pilot until his retirement in 1986.
