[Photography] Practical Lawn-Tennis
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1893. Scarce First Edition of one of the first tennis books to show action photographs illustrating various racket strokes. Small 8vo: xvi,168,[6 adverisements]pp, with 25 full-page photographic plates, 6 tables and 4 text figures. Publisher's navy blue decorative cloth, upper cover with crossed-tennis rackets device in red and gilt, spine stamped in gilt. Fine: binding square and tight, pages clean and crisp, with only minor faults (light edge wear, three passages of several lines each noted in margin with straight vertical line in pencil). An exemplary example. Dwight James is considered the "Founding Father of American Tennis" and served as President of the U.S. Lawn Tennis Association for twenty-one years. He won the first recorded tennis tournament in the United States (and probably in the world), in 1876, in Nahant, Mass. Practical Lawn Tennis is his second book, in which he changed some of his earlier views on technique, treating Lawn Tennis as its own game. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. Fine.
