Green Hills of Africa.
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1935 - Octavo. Original green cloth, gilt lettered spine on a black ground, facsimile of Hemingway's signature in gilt on front cover, untrimmed, top edge pale tan. With the dust jacket. Housed in a green cloth chemise and dark green quarter morocco slipcase. Binding spine and periphery of covers slightly sunned, jacket spine lightly toned, minor creasing and nicks to extremities, a few light scuffs to slipcase. A very good copy. Chapter headings and other decorations by Edward Shenton. First edition, first printing. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "Dr. Hemingstein, I presume yrs always Ernest Hemingway". A playful presentation echoing Stanley's famous greeting to Livingstone. "Dr. Hemingstein" was a persona assumed by Hemingway on various occasions, sometimes as "Dr. Hemingstein the Philospher", "old Dr. Hemingstein, that masterful deducer" and other variations. Writer Lillian Ross notes in her memoir that he "signed a few letters 'Papa', but mostly he signed them 'Ernest' or 'Honest Ernie' or 'Huck von Hemingstein' or 'Ernest Buck Hemingstein' or 'Mountain Boy Huck' or 'Huckmanship von Hemingstein'" (Portrait of Hemingway, 1961). An attractive copy in Grissom's "Jacket B": with the green band on the back panel of the jacket extending through nine lines of text (he refers to these as "styles" of jacket and not "states"). Czech, African Big Game 1785 to 1950, p. 74 ("Hemingway's classic is based very closely on his safari to East Africa"); Grissom A13.1.a; Hanneman A13. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]
