Kafka is known for his use of an isolated and detached protagonist who is forced to face a bizarre, surreal predicaments and has been interpreted as exploring themes of alienation, existential anxiety, guilt, and absurdity (N. B. info from Wiki). ***ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATOR: Michael Hafftka was born to Holocaust survivors in 1953 and is an American figurative expressionist painter. He has work in the permanent collections of many museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New York MOMA, the San Francisco MOMA,and the Carnegie Museum of Art (N. B. info from Wiki and the artist's web site). ***DESCRIPTION: Heavy ivory paper folded over cardboard wrap, yapped fore-edge, hand-sewn and hand-bound by Carol Joyce; lithographs by Michael Hafftka on hand-made Japanese paper; printed on mould-made Magnani paper in monotype Walbaum; pagination: (1) - 53, blanks (54-55), colophon (56); 10.5" tall; signed by illustrator Michael Hafftka; Limited Edition no. 158 of 800; cased in a natural linen and black clamshell box lined with black felt; cream paper label with black text on spine. ***CONDITION: Book is in fine condition overall; the paper wrap is bright and clean, as is the interior, the book is free of prior owner markings; there are a few very shallow creases to the bottom of the wraps, else fine.
