Rare Proof-Antique Print-HARBOUR-FLOATING DOCK-AMSTERDAM-de Jong-Salieth-c.1781
- Antique print, titled: 'De Haven van Amsterdam. - Le Fort d' Amsterdam.' - The print shows 'The Harbour of Amsterdam' with several sail boats. One (a large ship of the line) is being repaired in a floating dock. A misprint in the caption - Fort should be Port. Engraving on hand laid paper. Description: This is a rare proof. The resulting finished and altered print was published in Amsterdam by P. Yver, J. Smit en Zoon, en F.W. Greebe and later published in: 'Atlas van de zeehavens der Bataafsche Republiek die van Batavia en Onrust mitsgaders der afbeeldingen van de haringvisscherij en de walvischvangst in een-en-dertig kunstplaaten . met vermelding van veele bijzonderheden betreffende den ouden en lateren toestand des Nederlandsche koophandels, visscherijen, trafieken en fabrieken .', by C. v.d. Aa, published in 1805 in Amsterdam by E. Maaskamp. Rare proof before final lettering. The final print published in 1781 displays a trimmed image on all sides.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Mathias de Salieth' after 'D. de Jong'. Mathias de Sallieth (1749 - 1791): Czech etcher/engraver of etchings, stipple engravings and aquatint. Publisher and artist. Born in Prague, died in Rotterdam. He worked in Vienna, Paris, Schoonderloo and Rotterdam. He was a student of J.E. Mansfeld in Vienna and Jacques Philippe Le Bas in Paris. He worked for F. Samsom. Dirk de Jongh (active 1779-1805) was a Dutch printmaker, cartographer and draughtsman. Condition: Good, given age. Light soiling. Light creasing and some old fold lines, mostly only visible on rear. Oval shape tear in top of print in sky near flag of middle ship, backed with contemporary paper. Two tiny pinholes in lower right area, barely noticable. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully. Storage location: (TPCRC) B1-07 The overall size is ca. 18.7 x 14 inch. The image size is ca. 16.6 x 11.5 inch. The overall size is ca. 47.6 x 35.5 cm. The image size is ca. 42.1 x 29.1 cm. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
