First Edition; Med. 4to; pp. Vol. I. viii, 589; Vol. II. xliv. 429; frontispiece portraits in both volumes, 14 b/w. engraved plates several of which are double page, both volumes in original blue cloth, with the rare original printed dustjackets, worn, but complete, very good set. Joseph Baron Lister (1827-1912), Lister championed the use of carbolic acid as an antiseptic, such that it became the first widely used antiseptic in surgery. Lister's work led to a reduction in post-operative infections and made surgery safer for patients distinguishing himself as the 'father of modern surgery
