- Map : 'Candia olim Creta'. (Map of Crete.) Beautiful originally hand coloured map of Crete with 2 cartouches. Copperplate engraving on verge type hand laid paper with watermark. Original hand colour and new colouring. Description: Origin: Ioannis Ianssonii Novus Atlas, sive Theatrum Orbis Terrarum . Ca. 1650. Artists and Engravers: Johannes Janssonius also known as Jan Jansson was born 1588 in Arnhem, Netherlands. His father was a bookseller and publisher (Jan Janszoon the Elder). When he married the daughter of the cartographer Jodocus Hondius he also set up a business as book publisher in Amsterdam. His first map was published in 1616. Around 15 years later he set up a partnership with his brother in law Hondius add issued further editions of the Mercator/Hondius atlas. After his death in 1664, his heirs still have published several maps. Many of his plates have been acquired by Pieter Schenk and Gerard Valk. Condition: Fine; general age related toning; some light staining from handling. Some separation from acidification from old colouring, backed for reinforcement. A few small tears backed. Storage location: B17-30 The overall size is ca. 21.5 x 16.1 inch. The image size is ca. 20.7 x 15 inch. The overall size is ca. 54.5 x 41 cm. The image size is ca. 52.5 x 38 cm.
