First edition. In this history of the 'island of martyrs' Freese focuses on the rebellions of Cretans against various oppressors, and the geopolitical position between the Ottoma and Russian Empires. This book was triggered by the Cretan insurrection against the Ottoman Empire in the year of this publication, which led to the foundation of a Cretan state under Ottoman suzerainty, backed by Britain, France, Italy and Russia in 1898.
