FIRST & ONLY LIMITED EDITION OF 1500 SUPERB MONOGRAPH ON NGUYEN HPAN CHANH [1892-1992] ** FIRST AND ONLY LIMITED EDITION OF 1500 COPIES This work was issued to commemorate the centennial anniversary of the artist-painter NGUYEN PHANH CHANH [1892-1992]. "Nguyen was the only painter in Vietnam in this century who specialized in painting on silk. His reputation was widely known in the 1930's not only in his homeland but in other countries as well through his exhibitions, especially the one organized in Paris in 1931." During the 1970's his silk paintings became more appealing and touching with all their sincerity and simplicity filled with love, altruism & humanism. They are a true expression of the Vietnamese soul and identity. Most of his silk paintings are displayed and preserved at the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum [Ha Noi] as works of arts of a master painter who had opened up a stage of development in the Vietnamese modern silk painting." The above extracted from the foreword. This superb monograph shows the artist's works from the earliest in 1931 down to the last in 1973. His works were for the most part devoted to women in their daily activities, many of bathing, tending children, with a few landscapes, birds, and flowers. His works clearly express a very profound love for his people & culture. He combined a Chinese ink painting style [gauche] with traditional Vietnamese style, creating a new and superb style with his stunning skill. His works are highly prized and seldom if ever found on the market. The artist was one of the first students in the first class at the L'Ecole Spuperieure des Beaux Arts de l'Lindochine [The Fine Arts Collecge of Indochina, Hanoi], founded in 1925. ERROR IN THE TEXT: Concerning the most famous and stunning of all his paintings, HAI RAU MUONG [CUTTING SPINICH], found on p.29, the date is mistakenly stated as "1934" when it actually is 1935, per the painting, and the Chinese cyclical date at the upper right. There are also problems with the list of paintings, the item numbers have shifted and don't match the silk painting numbers. Published by the National Fine Arts Museum. The work was compiled with introduction by Nguyen Hai Yen, with chronology. Color scans of this and most of our other items are posted to our website. .
