The Screwtape Letters
The First UK Printing published by Geoffrey Bles in 1942. The Book is in near Fine condition having been rebound in full black morocco with five raised bands, gilt titling and decoration. Top edge gilt with new marbled end-papers. Very light toning and the occasional spotting to the text block. Free from inscriptions. The original book spine with the paper title label has been pasted to one of the rear end-papers. The Screwtape Letters is a Christian apologetic novel by C. S. Lewis which is written in a satirical, epistolary style and while it is fictional in format, the plot and characters are used to address Christian theological issues, primarily those to do with temptation and resistance to it. The story takes the form of a series of letters from a senior Demon Screwtape to his nephew Wormwood, a Junior Tempter. The uncle's mentorship pertains to the nephew's responsibility in securing the damnation of a British man known only as 'the Patient'. A very attractive rebinding and scarce with such attributes. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
