An Explanation of the Fashion and Use of the Three and Fifty Instruments of Chirurgery. Gathered Out Of Ambrosius Pareus , the Famous French Chirurgian, and Done Into English, for the Behoofe of Yong Practicioners of Chirurgery, by H.C. (Helkiah Crooke).
London, Printed for Michael Sparke. 1631 - Small folio (210 x 320mm, 8 1/2 x 12 1/2ins) mid 19th century half morocco, marbled boards, spine mostly stripped, sound. Title with wood-cut figure, (iv) including Printer to the Reader (a lurid and illustrated description of a deformed murderer), (vi Preface to the Chirurgians), (iv) including To The Younger Sort of Barber-Chirugrians, 60. Many wood-cut illustrations of instruments and procedures throughout. Very light waterstain to first few gatherings. First, largest, Edition STC 19189, 6063, sometimes found as a supplement to Microkosmographia. Also mentioned is an abbreviated issue of 1634 (also Russell 223). Pare, a barber surgeon, rose through military experience to be physician to the French monarch Henry II and his successors. "The father of modern surgery." (Baas, Outlines). Crooke, whose most famous and controversial work Mikrokosmographia shared the publisher Jaggard with Shakespeare, and was at best a compilation, was the first doctor to hold the office of Keeper of Bethlehem Hospital where some called him a pioneering reformer. However accusations of neglect of his patients and embezzlement led to his removal, the defence costs of which ruined him. In "Explanation" he fully acknowledges Pare's work, and adds his own very hands-on notes, enhanced by the comprehensive selection of fine illustrations. Label of Surgeon Major J.W.Fleming, a noted bibliophile, with his signature and m.s. presentation to the Army Medico-Churgical Society, Portsmouth on title-page. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
