Octavo (18.5 × 11.5 cm). Sewn brochure with ochre paper spine strip; 15 pp. Old shelf mark to title verso; else a very good copy. Scarce pamphlet reproducing the text of an appeal to the German people by Prince Mikhail Illarionovich Golenishchev-Kutuzov (1845-1813), one of the key military officers in eighteenth-century Russia, known best, perhaps, for serving as commander-in-chief in 1812 and driving Napoleon's army out of Russia after it captured Moscow. Kutuzov's words of support for a "new-born Germany," united with Russia's rulers against the potential dangers still emanating from the French Empire, are amplified by a harsh anti-French preface by the anonymous publisher, the German Nationalist poet, historian, and activist Ernst Moritz Arndt (1769-1860). Cat. Russica A1101. KVK and OCLC only locate the copies at Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Zürich, and Geheimes Staatsarchiv Berlin.
