London: J. Nichols, and sold by J. Dodsley, et al., 1782 . First edition.. Hardcover. Very good. Yes. 2 volumes. lvii,(1),1-22,(2),23-204; (2), 224pp. 8vo. Frontispiece of the author in Volume 1 drawn by Gainsborough and etched by Bartolozzi, who also engraved the frontispiece to volume 2. The two pages between pp. 22 and 23 of volume 1 contain a letter received too late to be inserted in its proper place. Edited by Miss Crewe; the Life is by Joseph Jekyll. Unevenly bound set. Volume 1 is in the original and rare publisher's boards of cream paper spine and drab paper boards. Volume 2 is in contemporary full calf, spine with gilt rules. List of subscribers present in volume 1. Volume 1 is in fine condition, and the textblock is uncut. Volume 2 has an occasional trace of foxing, hinges cracked but firm, light edgewear and lacks the lettering label else very good. Excessively rare in first edition. Preserved in a custom leather-backed clamshell case. Lowndes p. 2184. ESTC T100345. Sabin 76310.
