Geneva: Manget & Cherbuliez, 1809 First edition. Extremities lightly worn, joints starting. A very good copy. Presentation copy, inscribed by the translator: "A Monsieur de Pellenc, Censeur Impérial, de la part du traducteur. The first work in the volume is the first edition of the first complete translation of Adam Smith's "Considerations Concerning the First Formation of Language," translated by the Swiss belletrist Jacques-Louis Manget. A fragmentary translation had been published in 1796, under the title "Considérations sur la première formation des langues." The essay was originally published in English in 1761 as part of The Philological Miscellany, and in 1767 it was added as an appendix to the third edition of The Theory of Moral Sentiments. The second work in the volume is Manget's translation of an extract from Schlegel's philological classic Ueber die Sprache und Weisheit der Indier, Heidelberg, 1808. The essay is an expansion of a lecture Smith delivered during his professorship at Glasgow, part of a series refined from his earlier lectures at Edinburgh. Smith's particular concern is with linguistic structure, and the essay develops a theory on the 'natural' structure of language and the causes and nature of linguistic development.
