Lettres inédites de Marie Stuart, accompagnées de diverses dépêches et instructions, 1558 -- 1587.
Fine. Publiées par le Prince Alexandre Labanoff. Paris: Chez Merlin, Librarie Quai des Augustins, 7. Firmin Didot Frères, Libraries, rue Jacob, 56, 1839. Large 8vo, 25.5 cm x 16.5 cm, [i (blank) ; lix ; 344 pages ; i (Errata) ; i (blank)]. Bound in red quarter straight-grained roan, with a gilt title. Fine. First edition, a large, untrimmed copy, to which has been added a letter from the editor to Monsieur Guillaume, Juge au Tribunal à Besançon, dated 15 fevrier 1839, and a tipped-in leaf with a fragment of red silk damask cut from the canopy hanging over Queen Marys bed at Holyrood House. The text, in French, of the owner, Monsieur Guillaume of Besançon, a Judge, relates the history of this secular relic of the Scottish queen, which came into his possession through the Duke and Duchess of Bordeaux. Additionally, Prince Lobanov-Rostovskii preserved in this, his own copy, two fragments of the sash worn by Charles X, the younger brother of Louis XVIII and Louis XVI, when he left France at Cherbourg for his exile in England in 1830. The Prince Labanoff was the first major editor of Queen Marys letters and the first important collector of the surviving secular relics relating to her life. Also laid in the book is a lithographed facsimile of a letter from Réné dAnjou dated 1436, Duke of Bar, Anjou and Lorraine, while imprisoned after being defeated in defense of his title as Duke of Lorraine, addressed to the people of Salins, granting them lettres patentes, in recognition of their help in raising his ransom.
