James R. Osgood Company, 1883. Hardcover. Very Good. James R. Osgood Company, Boston 1883. First Edition / First Printing / First Issue. Original brown cloth binding with gilt lettering and illustrations at the spine and front board. First issue with an illustration of Mark Twain's head in flames above an urn on page 441. This illustration was removed in later states because Twain's wife found the illustration morbid. Page 443 has the caption of the illustration that reads "The St. Louis Hotel", later states read "The St. Charles Hotel". Rare. {ref: BAL 3411}. Book Condition: Very Good, bright clean boards and spine, light shelf wear, moderate dampstains at the top edge and fore-edge of most pages, tight spine, age toning.
